Over the years, I'd been contemplating on cutting my hair. People had been trying to convince me not to because I’m a woman and women aren’t supposed to have short hair. They told me that I wouldn’t look attractive with short hair. I actually believed them! I know a lot of barbers and they told me they wouldn’t cut my hair even if I paid them.

You go on YouTube, watch tutorials on how to do the perfect wash and go, see all of the products the person is using and you decide to use them as well. You do your wash and go step by step, just like the YouTube tutorial. Then, when your hair is done, you look in the mirror and your hair looks like a wet poodle. You sit and try to figure out where you went wrong in the process. Did you miss a step? Did you not use enough leave in conditioner?
In the early 2000's, India Arie was encouraging women to embrace their natural hair. India was letting women know that it's okay to be yourself when the world is telling you otherwise. When I was 14, I was trying to fit in with everyone else with straight, relaxed hair. That's how society was back then (and sometimes today). If you didn't have straight hair you were considered "lame".
